EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon Track Club Elite’s Hanna Green closed out a productive indoor season with a runner-up finish in the 1,000 meters at the USATF Indoor Championships on Feb. 24.
Green, a second-year pro out of Virginia Tech, crossed the line with a personal best of 2 minutes, 35.40 seconds in the seldom-run distance at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Facility in Staten Island, N.Y.
Her performance ranks fourth all-time on the U.S. women’s indoor list.
“I was really happy with how everything turned out,” Green said. “Obviously, it would have been even better to come away with the win but second place was also very exciting.”
Green, 24, trailed only two-time World Indoor silver medalist and 2016 Olympian Ajee’ Wilson at the U.S. meet. Wilson, who stands No. 2 on the 1,000m all-time list, posted a winning time of 2:34.71.
“In the finals, my main goal was to get top three,” Green said. “I didn’t get off the starting line very well, but after making my way up to the front I just tried to relax until the final lap, and then I gave it whatever I had left.”
In all, Green competed in five races during the indoor season.
She opened with a victory and personal best in the mile (4:35.20) at the UW Invitational, followed by a second-place performance in the 800m (2:03.08) at the Camel City Elite. She won the 800m with a season-best of 2:02.80 at the UW Last Chance meet heading into the USATF Indoor Championships.
Green was second in her qualifying heat at the U.S. meet with a time of 2:38.16.
“Overall, this indoor season went really well for me,” Green said. “The weekend (at U.S. Indoors) helped me build my confidence and I think that will help me a lot in the outdoor season, knowing that I can be competitive with the best middle distance runners in the U.S.”
